Why I Teach
Childbirth Education
Working as a doula and as a newborn photographer, I have had many conversations with families about how unprepared for childbirth, and especially the postpartum period, they felt they were, even after their childbirth education class. This led to me wanting to provide a more comprehensive class that really digs in deep and helps to prepare families for what lies ahead.
Let's face it, pregnancy can be overwhelming! Many people report feeling unclear about the options available to them in pregnancy and postpartum, and when they look for answers they end up getting unhelpful, unsolicited, and/or incorrect advice and information.
1. Comprehensive and Inclusive Curriculum
- Wide Range of Topics: My course covers crucial subjects such as self-advocacy, pregnancy experiences and complications, labor preparation, medical support, postpartum planning, mood and anxiety disorders, and infant care.
- Holistic Approach: By encompassing physical, emotional, and mental health aspects, my class ensures you’re well-prepared for all stages of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
- Inclusivity: Every family is unique, and my curriculum is designed to respect and celebrate diversity in race, religion, age, marital status, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
2. Expert Training and Certification
- Qualified Educator: I bring a wealth of expertise and specialized knowledge to the table through the various trainings that I have completed through Allo Doula Academy, CAPPA, BADT, and Postpartum Support International. My qualifications ensure you receive accurate, up-to-date, and evidence-based information.
- Experienced Educator: My extensive background as a doula, nanny, educator, and photographer allows me to bring a wealth of practical knowledge and insight to each class.
3. focus on Mental Health
- Passionate About Mental Health: My personal passion for mental health means that I take an in-depth look at postpartum mood and anxiety disorders, helping you recognize signs and understand how to seek help early on.
- Supportive Environment: I create a safe space where you can openly discuss mental health concerns and learn strategies to manage any issues that arise.
4. Practical Self-Advocacy Skills
- Building Confidence: My class emphasizes self-advocacy, equipping you with the skills to confidently communicate your needs and preferences to healthcare providers during pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum.
- Tailored Birth Plans: We work together to create a birth plan that respects your personal values and fosters a positive birthing experience.
5. Interactive and Engaging Learning
- Hands-On Learning: My teaching style includes interactive discussions, role-playing, and scenario-based learning to prepare you for real-life situations.
- Supportive Environment: Class participants are encouraged to share their experiences and support one another, fostering a community of learning and collaboration.
6. Tailored Postpartum Planning
- Postpartum Preparation: We cover all aspects of postpartum care, from physical healing to mental well-being, and include strategies for managing postpartum mood and anxiety disorders.
- Family Involvement: Gain insights on how to involve your support network in your postpartum care, ensuring you have a strong system of support.
7. Professional and Community Resources
- Resource-Rich: Access a comprehensive list of professional and community resources to support you during and after pregnancy.
- Local Networks: Get introduced to local support groups, healthcare providers, and mental health professionals who can offer continued care.
